At the end of 2018, Uber unveiled its ‘Clean Air Plan’, an initiative designed to tackle air pollution in London and address some of the key challenges drivers face when upgrading to low emission vehicles. EO Charging was selected as one of Uber’s official electric vehicle charging partners in a bid to help all of its drivers transition to electric by 2025.
As part of the company’s ‘Clean Air Plan’, a ‘clean air fee’ of 15p per mile was introduced on every trip booked through the Uber app in London. Every penny raised goes toward helping drivers upgrade to an electric vehicle as well as other clean air initiatives.
Uber expects 20,000 drivers to upgrade to electric vehicles by the end of 2021. The firm currently has 45,000 licensed drivers operating in the city and more than 3.5 million riders using the platform.

Working alongside Uber’s key vehicle lease partners – Otto Car, Drover and PCO Rentals, EO has installed charging units at Uber driver’s homes across the capital. The installed home charging units allow drivers with off-street charging to charge their vehicle overnight, providing enough range to complete an average shift.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has made it his priority to clean up the city’s dirty air, and earlier this year introduced ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) - a daily charge of £12.50 on drivers of older, polluting petrol and diesel vehicles. Adding to the existing congestion charge, ULEZ will further expand to more roads in the inner London area from October 2021 onwards.
